Will Todd Composer
Will Todd (b. 1970)
Will Todd’s music is sung and loved all over the world. His flagship work is the jazz mass setting Mass in Blue, which has been performed hundreds of times around the world since its 2003 premiere; on most occasions with the Will Todd Trio and Will at the piano. The larger Will Todd Ensemble has also recorded Mass in Blue with the Vasari Singers for Signum Records.
His anthem The Call of Wisdom was commissioned by St Paul’s Cathedral for the Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service where it was performed by the Diamond Choir. The album of the same name, featuring award-winning choir Tenebrae, was Classic FM’s CD of the week and is still frequently played on the station.
Will’s arrangement of Amazing Grace was performed as part of President Obama’s inauguration celebrations and Will also performed this work live on Radio 3 as part of the BBC tribute to Nelson Mandela.
Other notable works include opera The Blackened Man which won second prize in the International Verdi Opera Competition, and was subsequently staged at the Buxton Festival; oratorio Saint Cuthbert which has been performed many times and recorded by the Hallé Orchestra; music theatre work The Screams of Kitty Genovese, produced most recently by Tête á Tête Opera in London and Edinburgh; and a cantata about the Jarrow March – The Burning Road.
Recent work includes a setting of Dylan Thomas’ Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night for Crouch End Festival Chorus; a new opera Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for Opera Holland Park; major new commissions for Portsmouth Cathedral, The Sixteen, and Tenebrae; and regular singing workshops with choirs around the UK.
Will spent October 2014 visiting many US choirs in a hugely well-received tour, which included many performances in prestigious venues. In the same month, Lux et Veritas, an album of Will Todd music performed by award-winning choir Tenebrae with the English Chamber Orchestra, was released and reached No 2 in the specialist classical chart. Lux et Veritas has been voted one of the top 20 albums of 2014 by Classic FM.
